Description
Tawaf is the final fragrance in my Arabian series. As the conclusion for this collection, I have chosen to compose a fragrance that sings the very soul of the Arab people.
Tawaf is the name of the ritual consisting in circumambulations around the Ka’abah, the cube-shaped building in Mecca, adorned with black silk.
The Ka’abah is the geographic center of the Arabian soul, of its spirituality, culture, and civilization.
The Tawaf fragrance is the aromatic “melody” of the scents that surround those performing the Tawaf.
It brings together the trails of Jasmine Sambac that pilgrims wear, the rose water poured from buckets to wash the white marble floor and the Opoponax attar spread by the handful over the corners of the Ka’abah. These are the essences that comprise the new fragrance.
Other ingredients meaningful in the Arabic tradition are Narcissus and Myrrh.
The perfume is binary in structure, with a Jasmine accord intertwining with an Oppoponax accord in the same way those Chinese silk fabrics display two different colors depending on how the light shines on them.
Because of the acoustic qualities of the “aromatic notes” I played in composing this perfume, the Tawaf melody became a symphony, and it is indeed the fragrance with which I am the most satisfied of all those that I have composed in the Arabian series.

I got a very strong blast of oppoponax at first and I wasn’t sure how I felt about that – something about raw oppoponax seems to temporarily give me a strange woozy feeling, the closest of which I can compare to is an alcoholic hangover, without the headache. (Is this what people mean by “heady”?)
But a few minutes into it Tawaf settled down into a luscious jasmine, interwoven with resin. I’m not sure if this is the right word but it’s the most “dignified” jasmine perfume I have tried. Like approaching a subtropical temple surrounded by jasmine. I love smelling it, it reminds me of another incense perfume I love, which is also a blend of florals and resins but with the resins more front and center.
Yet part of me almost thinks I might be too young and frivolous to pull off wearing Tawaf, haha. This in spite of the fact that I not normally think about whether I can pull off a perfume—I’ve always approached it more as wearing smells I like to smell—I don’t generally think of myself as a frivolous person, but next to this perfume I certainly feel frivolous!
I do love smelling it in the air, though. I’ll have to think more about whether I’ll come back to Tawaf for a bigger sample or bottle, but I’ll certainly give it as many wears as my current sample permits.

Or Tawaf est justement remarquablement dosé, équilibré, mesuré.

Masterpiece!
Shin Seat Byeol –
Wow! This is a fascinating scent enough!
The central base of this incense is rose water and myrrh.
And the scent of jasmine and daffodils is heart.
This fragrance is infinitely clean and pure, but there is a very dark and sensual image hidden in this scent.
I’m very satisfied.

Now to Tawaf.
I had bought a minion years ago and just found it back last week. I must say Tawaf is a scent I wasn’t ready for at the time. I mightn’t be ready now either but I think I’m getting close to it.
There are indeed no words.
The jasmine is still very strong on my skin but it pairs perfectly with the opoponax, both rich and bitter at the same time. It is special, it is powerful, it is a statement. Of what, I couldn’t say.
A true work a alchemy. Really worth trying.

Smelling Tawaf was lifechanging.
I can’t begin to express my love for how you orchestrated that brilliant, brilliant composition.

TAWAF – the blending kit
Every “Tawaf Custom Blending Kit” contains, besides the Tawaf-perfume itself, three vials, a small funnel and two 6 ml per bottles with the accords “Jasmine” and “Oppoponax”.
Each accord does of course not only consist of jasmine respectively oppoponax, but is a blend that contains in the case of “Jasmine” other floral components (rose, narcissus) and in the case of “Oppoponax” other resins. The quality of the ingredients is top-notch. There are different techniques to blend the accords and to customise the perfume. You can find a detailed explanation of the methods on Profumo’s website profumo.it. I didn’t use the vials and the funnel, I applied the scents directly to my skin. My main goal was to tame the jasmine and to enhance the resins. You know, to get this priest-is-swaying-a-shiny-censer-in-my-mind’s-eye-effect which I talked about in my review of the Tawaf-perfume!
But before I started blending I tried the accords on their own: In “Jasmine” I can smell all three flowers very clear, I can even smell the narcissus, although I had my problems detecting it in the perfume. The chocolaty-animalic drydown I smelled in the perfume seems to come from this accord because it leaves the same subdued scent on the skin after a while. “Oppoponax” is hard to describe, it smells slightly resinous, a bit sweet (honey) and surprisingly also a little bit flowery (lavender?). It contains myrrh and other resins too, but I can’t really detect them, everything is homogeneously blended, but I think the flowery aspect comes from the oppoponax itself. “Oppoponax” is a very quiet accord with a short lifespan on my skin. It’s no wonder that it has its problems to resist the jasmine-accord.
Okay, ’nuff said! Let’s start blending: First I used the perfume itself as a base. One spritz on my arm and then I added one of “Oppoponax”, two s…, but it was quite a task to overcome the supremacy of “Jasmine”! After that I used only the accords and that way it was much easier to achieve what I was looking for. Starting at a ratio of 2 to 1 (Oppoponax to Jasmine) I could already tame the jasmine. The scent became more resinous and the jasmine added the metallic coolness that I was hoping to gain. Well, I didn’t really see the priest with the censer, but I think it’s because oppoponax is a totally different kind of resin/incense which doesn’t remind me of church, and I must admit that I didn’t smell oppoponax before, so maybe I was expecting something else! What I generally observerved is that no matter in which ratio you blend the accords the result will always smell good, but there is also a certain dissonance between the two accords, they decline to melt together. What I also observed is that the oppoponax-accord always disappears long before the jasmine-accord. By the way it would be interesting to know in which ratio Profumo’s version was exactly blended, because the perfume is really growing on me, from day to day I like it more, but the exact formula is certainly a secret!
The blending kit is really great, you can play with it for hours! This is also a very nice and fun entry in the world of perfume-making. You can’t really mess it up because the scent will always smell acceptable, no matter in which ratio you blend the accords. It also gives you the rewarding feeling that you created something on your own and didn’t just consume a premade product!

Hi Salaam,
I just received my new order and wanted to let you know that I think Sharif, Attar Maulana (which I already have) and Tawaf are fantastic!
You have really created something special with your Arabian Series.
The new bottles are also very beautiful.

Thank you-it arrived today!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it is so very beautiful. It was perfectly wrapped, in a very sturdy box, with air bags and a kind note.
It’s so beautiful I felt like crying. The bottle is beautiful-the proportions of the bottle is perfect for the liquid. The writing is beautiful-I wonder what does it say? And the fragrance inside-I get mostly jasmine, and then a ribbon of rose, followed hours later by spicy resinous opopanox. The beautiful jasmin stays with me at all times. It dances with the opopanox, and lives in joyous harmony with the rose. The fragrance stays close to my skin but at the same time surrounds me in this wonderful circle of sacred scent. How do you do this? It’s just magic. I love it.
This is the second time I have been moved to tears by your creation-Sharif is a wonderful talisman, and now this. Please feel free to use these words to your customers-the world should know all about your work. It is just so special, and transporting.
I will try others in your line. i have such respect for your work, and your generosity is second to none. I live so far away from you, on the very eastern part of Nova Scotia. Maybe it will amuse you that your creation has flown across the world and is giving me joy :)
