What is Niche Perfumery?

“Niche” is a term commonly used in the marketing and economic scenario. A niche market is typically defined as a confidential and narrow sector, mostly corresponds to some specialized categories of products. When a brand targets a niche market, it experiences less competition but also meets the challenge of fewer customer opportunities.

In the perfumery industry, niche perfumery is differentiated from the mainstream perfumery specifically by a confidential and specialized distribution network. Usually, these perfumes aren’t sold in general perfume retails.

History of Niche Perfumery

From the last decades of the 20th century, niche perfumery has gained popularity, especially in North America and Europe, among people trying to find unique perfumes. As per Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez, writers of “Perfumes: The A-to-Z Guide”, L’Artisan Perfumer which was founded in 1976 in Paris, is the first niche perfumery firm.

Four of our fragrances are mentioned in the book and have received 4 stars, Grezzo d’eleganzaHindu KushTabac, and “Elle, a custom perfume especially realized for him.

“La Via del Profumo” is the only company producing 100% natural perfumes present in “The Guide”.

In the 2010s, international luxury conglomerates took over many niche houses and included them in large distribution.  These changes forced many niche perfumes as ubiquitous as mainstream perfumes and available in many department stores.

Common Niche Perfumery Categories

Niche brands are so diverse and it’s very difficult to categorize them and sometimes even to recognize the olfactive groups of their creations. However, there’re some fundamental characteristics that niche brands adhere to distinguish themself from mass perfumers –

  • Niche brands have their own perfumer in charge of the scents of the house.
  • Niche brands have very selective approaches to distribute their products. The perfumes of niche brands are generally not seen in shops that sell mainstream perfume products or big store chains.

Niche perfumery is a substitute for mass fragrance production. In niche perfumery, creativity and art should take the first place.

Niche houses can differ from others by –

  • Scents of particular places – cities, countries, islands, and more.
  • Using exclusive natural substances – animal pheromones and herbal extracts.
  • Using synthetic materials – synthetic alcohol, synthetic juices, and chemical compounds.
  • Focusing on a single base note – for example, vanilla scents or rose attars.
  • Capturing the smells of exotic locales.

Should You Shift from Mainstream to Niche Perfumes?

In the battle between mainstream and niche perfumes, both choices come with unique selling points. It typically depends on your personal choice and the standard of which type of fragrance you want to wear.

Let’s look at some considerable factors –

Accessibility

Most mainstream brands involve mass fragrance productions and distribute through a large distribution network. On the other hand, though many niche perfumes are widely available nowadays, these fragrances are rarely available compared to mainstream perfumes.

Smell

Your preference of smell is the most important thing in selecting between mainstream perfume and niche perfume. Your choice generally depends on how you want to wear your scents. Do you want to wear simply a famous scent? Or do you want to wear a unique scent and be remembered due to your unique smell?

There’s a wide range of mainstream fragrances that come in a variety of smells, but a lot of people are already using them. If you want to wear something personal and unique, niche perfumes will be your best fit.

Cost

Mainstream perfumes generally appear at lower prices than niche perfumes. But if you look into the lasting property and the quality of the materials, niche perfumes may not seem too pricey.

Health hazards

If you have allergies and higher sensitivity to some substances, you’ll need to consider only natural perfumes that typically come under the group of natural niche perfumes. But before choosing your favorite perfume, you’ll need to have a small allergy test of the scent materials to see if any intolerance appears or not.

Which Niche Perfumery Should You Consider?

Niche perfumery brands are so diverse with different categories and groups. Unfortunately, most niche brands use the same bases, juices produced by the same big pharma or chemical companies in their fragrance production as other designer perfumery brands.

The chemical substances used in the perfumery industry are harmful to humans, animals, and the environment.

Mainstream and many niche brands eliminated natural substances not only in their new products but also from classical products by reformulating them, due to easy accessibility and lower price of synthetic raw materials.

However, only natural niche perfumery brands like Abdus Salam Attar use only natural extracts of plants and animals to produce eco-friendly exclusive fragrances. These natural perfumes don’t have any adverse effects, instead have some tremendous healing power that can help you improve your body, mind, and soul.
