Jim Lewis –
This is, indeed, my favorite stuff in the world,
the scent I wear every day (and hardly a day goes by without someone complimenting me on it. It is, as Salaam says, a version of Mecca Balsam, but more muted and simple the first thing you will notice is the absence of tobacco, and much less, if any, fankincense. Instead, there’s a lovely, warm and attractive accord, based on labdanum and, I’m guessing, a bit of ambergris, a bit of carrot, a bit of castoreum, and perhaps a few s of sandalwood. I could be wrong about all of this, but that’s what I detect. The result is resinous and ambery, but with it’s sweetness cut with a little bite of spices, and very faint tones of very fresh sweat. It is, to me, the ideal masculine: calm but not passive, unusual, steady, strong and long-lasting, but subtle, and above all, warm. It’s there when you need it, but it doesn’t take over the room. I cannot recommend it enough: indeed, when my ship comes in, I’m going to stockpile the stuff (unless I can convince Salaam to give me the recipe…), so that I never have to run out of it again. None of the 200 or so perfumes I’ve tried comes close to this.
