Persona seemed too strong to me at first, but it’s grown on me over time and I keep returning to it, each time appreciating it even more. This is a great “classic” men’s perfume – reminds me of my grandfather with a lot of those vintage barbershop notes. It certainly is a very outdoorsy smell, but I would describe it more as a stroll along a river since there is a strong aquatic presence in addition to the fresh, green notes, so it’s not a typical “forest” scent.
On me it’s a fresh, green and creamy fragrance, a beautiful juxtaposition. Among other notes and associations I get whiffs of vetiver, pine, basil, citrus (neroli?) and castoreum, along with gentle smoky notes. There is a generous portion of castoreum here, which rounds out the edges and together with other creamy notes keeps Persona from being too sharp, but doesn’t stop it from retaining those refreshing sour green notes long into the drydown. Together with certain aspects of neroli and vetiver it also provides a subtle leathery backbone to the entire composition. Because of its composition, Persona wears fairly similarly year-round and is in my opinion suitable for all seasons.
A very relaxed, refreshing and calming fragrance, one of those that fit any occasion with ease. Vetiver lovers will get what they want here, but certainly not only that.
Diamondflame –
For those who have tried natural botanicals, they don’t always smell ‘natural’. Credit still has to go to the perfumer for mixing in just the right amount of natural ingredients to create the desired impressions. If the goal here is to recreate a harmonious scent reminiscent of a cool brisk morning hike up a forested trail, then I think Salaam has delivered. I was hardly surprised to discover later that PERSONA was actually a bespoke formulation for a guy who loves nature!
On my skin, this is mostly a cool grassy vetiver and creamy sandalwood, with citrus-woodsy undertones, presumably from high grade neroli. The bracing lift from frankincense and petitgrain is most prominent in the first hour, imbuing it with deep dark almost pine-green hues but bow out gracefully as vetiver takes centerstage, combining seamlessly with sandalwood in the base to create an accord that recalls the drydown in Amouage Memoir Man or Xerjoff Modoc. High praise indeed!
Personally, I might have preferred a little more frankincense in it but concede that it could alter the desired first impression. That said, this remains a remarkably calming and contemplative scent, perfect for that affable down-to-earth personality.
