Cedarwood has been used as incense since the earliest civilizations, such as those of the Egyptians and Tibet. And it is still widely used in Tibetan medicine and as an aid in meditations by Tibetan Buddhists and others. It is believed to strengthen spirituality and bring us closer to the Divine world, and the wood itself was used in temple construction as a symbol of this. It can also help us develop and maintain a sense of balance and self-control in our lives.

In physical applications, Cedar oil is a powerful antiseptic and mucolytic (in fact it dissolves phlegm), and we can find similar powers in its spiritual use: in fact, it helps us dissolve the “mental phlegm” that clogs our minds, just as on the physical level it clogs our noses.

The “Cedar” we sometimes hear about, which was used by American Indians, in purification ceremonies (“fumigations”), is actually a variety of Juniper.
