Description

The scent of Sandalwood is mythical in the same way as the fragrances of musk and amber: its name is universally known but it is now so rare and precious that most people have never smelled anything but the poor chemical substitutes that industry produces for the cheap mass production.

The planet simply does not produce enough essence of Sandalwood for all its inhabitants. It cannot be: a Sandal tree needs 35 years to grow, 10 minutes are enough to pull it down. Logging of the tree is strictly limited by law in India, the main producer of the most valuable essence, but this generates a smuggling market that has endangered the very existence of that species.

In India, this wood is traditionally dedicated to sacred uses, such as the construction of temples, statues and crematory functions. In its country of origin, there are for Sandalwood a billion consumers who, beyond the uses listed above, are also regular burners of sandalwood incense. All this makes us understand that the sandalwood fragrance that we find in so many home or personal perfumes is certainly not from a plant that has such a difficult life.

India is also the first producer of chemical sandal and it is paradoxically extremely difficult to find the true essential oil of Sandal in India because the major part of it is exported to get into the Country’s valuable international currency. The seal of the State of Mysore on the bottle is also not a guarantee: the Indians are not less skillful than Neapolitans in counterfeiting stamps.
