Description
My travel to Mecca inspired me to compose this fragrance of the Scents of the Soul, “Mecca Balsam”.
In Mecca, the scents of Labdanum resin, Benzoin, Frankincense, and precious Agarwood invade the streets, along with the 4 million pilgrims who pour into the streets five times every day, walking to the great mosque like a river.
The ritual of purification required for entering the sacred state of Ihram and for taking its simple white dress involves the lavish use of perfumes, but once the Ihram is dressed, no pilgrim can use perfumes anymore.
The trail of a million scents left by the pilgrims at Mecca captures the visitor’s nose. It makes this travel an unforgettable experience for a Westerner little used to such a profusion of olfactory stimulus.
I imagined the perfume at Mecca itself while walking among the pilgrims, and I had already found its name there: “Mecca Balsam.” I would compose it with the smells and fragrances that are omnipresent in the holy city; it would be its olfactory signature.
Back in Italy, while my memories were still fresh and my spirit still filled with the pilgrimage, I started blending the essences of my perfumer’s organ.
The grave and austere note of Labdanum, deep and resinous, at once sacred and profane, is the center of gravity of “Mecca Balsam”.
Wrapped in the amber fragrance of Tonka and the mystic aroma of Arabic Frankincense, Labdanum’s wildness is tamed in an almost ecclesiastic scent that evocates at once the perfume of mosques and the music of cathedral pipe organs.
The scent of raw Tobacco, always present in the background, is like an anchor that binds the base accord, giving them a common denominator.
The flowery notes of Indian Tuberose and Damask Rose enrich the base of the balsam in the fashion of Arabic fragrances, bestowing the perfume an opulence worthy of the precious aromatic elixirs worn by the royal family of Saudi Arabia.
Mecca Balsam is a fragrance that is liked by men and women alike. Its warming, full, and aromatic aroma somehow gives a fatherly sense of security.

Alhamdullilah — masterly blend of plural fragrant faces of forces rushing by; invoking the signature of the pilgrim as this scent “moves”.
“Movement” tends to be guilty of forgetfulness, but the dynamic in this scent has a beautiful innocence and reminds of the Qibla, the Divine Center around which the pilgrim moves.
This is gentle artisanship.

Scent of the Day.
‘Mecca Balsam’ @laviadelprofumo
Incense Sunday & this is a powerful intense incense that really takes you on a journey. It’s feels strange to talk of being in a place you’ve never been to, it’s imagined from the images I know plus what I understand as what things might possibly smell like. A great perfume fills in those gaps & makes this imagined space come alive. Do you have any perfumes that transport you places? Ones that maybe take you back in time somewhere? Let me know!?
Spices spark as this ignites, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves & some anise form the spicy heat of the ember as smoke slowly rises. It’s a beautiful plume of smoke, with cool woody earthy frankincense adding a counterpoint to the spice, forming an incense that feels full & whole. There’s a deep raw tobacco & labdanum weaving their rich magic here, huge dark & resinous, it’s rough & kind of boozy too. Subtle florals lurk keeping the dark resinous beast on a leash, it tames it a little, making it rounder & softer, as agarwood adds some beautiful rich fruity stewed complexities, making things feel even more full. This is powerful rough & raw incense lasts for ages, slowly shifting like you’re walking through smoke filled streets as incenses burn around you & other subtle aromas add too it, making my imagined place feel real.

I was lucky enough to win a bottle of this wonderful perfume, I’d been skirting the edges of this house for a while after reading about the work of Dominique Dubrana the perfumer, some say the Mandy Aftel of Europe, many a perfumer emerges from his courses.
It’s also one of those houses that’s hard to know where to start as the choices are vast & intriguing, I have a shortlist of 5. So winning a bottle left me off the hook & decided for me & boy was I happy when I smelled this. I’ve worn it a few times to try & learn how it does what it does & there’s a lot of beautiful complexities, but is one of those beautiful ones I get lost in, as it allows me to forget & just dream.
Many thanks for this beautiful gift.
Thoughts of incense sorts below.

The beautiful calligraphy on the bottle pulls you in, you follow it round till you reach the message in its heart. As this portal opens, its aroma transports you away from your surroundings, it puts me in a space of intense thought. I’m reminded of incense right away, Japanese mediative ones, but much louder & more spiced; & also Indian masala incense, the kind with no flowers just spice & herbs. There’s an array of beautifully combined spices creating this illusion & bringing you to this new place. Cinnamon, cardamom, anise & cloves are here for sure. Together they lend the feel of an incense smoke’s plume & also the ember as it burns hot. To counter this there’s a cool almost terpenic aroma drifting under this plume of spice, some dark dry earthy woodiness too; frankincense, but where its citrus facets usually lay, the woody terpenic notes take over.
I think the spices are pulling more of this fiery feel out. Labdanum all raw, resinous, deep & intense is quietly brewing underneath. It’s making this powerful dark raw chewing tobacco accord with some oud, agarwood in this case. Also where the woody terpenes are escaping from. There’s something very direct yet mysterious about this aroma. The smoke feels like it’s swirling waiting to decide which path to take.

Aah, Mecca Balsam! The fragrance that feel most myself and touch deeply my soul. Big words, but this is how I feel with Mecca Balsam.
I love Mecca’s warm, rich, deep and smooth scent, especially in the drydown. Top notes are quite strong for a moment, but drydown is something to waiting for. I can mostly smell cinnamon, tonka, tobacco, smoke, labdanum and amber, but I believe here is more notes behind. Mecca is very beautiful, rich, deep and complex scent in overall.
Maybe my number 1 fragrance of them all!

So much reviews and I can only agree….
This is a character scent. It has and it is for a warm bright character. Mystical and strong. Feelings of security and home arise when wearing it. It calms down the people surrounding you.
It awakees with spices and turns to a very complex bakhoor scent that is something that makes you addicted to it, and this sometimes for days.
The love that the perfume gave me I will give back to Abdessaalam and his family for bottling up something special. Shukraan akhi.

I am totally impressed by this perfume.
However this perfume is to be enjoyed in serene atmosphere, free from the noise , traffic and pollution of crowded places. The first spray is amazing freshness. I can smell “petrichor”. The fragrance settles after that .. base notes are meditative. Its to be enjoyed in a meditative state or just with a handful of chosen friends.

The first note has the spice of all kinds of spices.
The first note I take is cinnamon.
The sweet and sweet scent is sweet like Amber.
(A note, it is called Tonka Bean).
Outside, the fragrance is very exotic because it has a very stable feeling, but it is a neat male scent that doesn’t feel rejected.
The distinctive, pungent scent all binds the scent, which is the scent of fresh tobacco leaves.
Dried tobacco leaves, not live grass.
The first impression is like a scent of cappuccino.
The bitter aroma of coffee is like tobacco leaves. (When I was young, I said that it was like smoking cigarettes when I first ate Americano! )
The sweetness of the Americano melted with the cinnamon’s spicy aroma and syrup.
(Cinnamon and Tonka Bean flavour is strong! * Tonka bean is warm and sweet like vanilla flavour.) And soft milk.
The top notes, however, have a very strong flavour of dried tobacco leaves.
However, it goes well with the scent of spices.
Similarly, the scent seems to blend the sweetness of whiskey in oak barrels, which have all of the alcohol removed, the aroma of highly concentrated beans, and the cappuccino, which has a strong cinnamon scent.
It’s a wonderful scent!
Although very exotic and unique, this scent is really warm and soft.
Whiskey + dark cappuccino + tobacco leaves in oak barrels.
The fragrance of the tobacco leaf becomes very intense as it enters the middle note.
This part resembles the aroma of leather seats in a car.
Leather seats and the smell in the car. That’s just that.
As a child, my father used to smoke in his car and came home every time, and the smell was on his suit.
Of course, it is not the scent of cigarettes. Not a burnt scent, tobacco leaves! It resembles the scent of
This fragrance blends with the fragrances in the car and the leather seats and tobacco aroma, reminiscent of a very old man, resembling his father, giving it a soft, warm and comfortable feeling.
This exquisite harmony would be sulfur, tonka bin and radanum.
I used to have tuberose and rose in my notes, but I don’t feel floral notes at all.
Accord is like oriental, spicy, and woody.
ThePerfumeChronicles –
Dark labdanum, sticky resins, a whiff of tobacco rising from pipes darkly smoked under the shadows of a lone, mighty mosque.
A faint floral heart : the oasis buried under mounds of sand.
A genie sings a song, priests burn the incense on the pyres.
A fire burns – in the heart.
Of the faithful hearts it burns.
Deep, silent, of a silence heavy with the prayers of despair.
Tears – of a self now leaving. Tears, of a life now commencing.
Tears of the Sun as it sets over the desert dunes of Mecca.
The most beautiful, the most faithful, the most soulful labdanum. Ever.

The most mystical perfume I’ve ever worn.
Alluring yet humble, opulent yet austere, warm yet cold as a marble tile, Mecca Balsam is a guaranteed trip to another world, to another time upon which time has no effect.
It is a journey of worship and descent to one’s inner self.
This scent is sticky but never cloying like an offering of fragrant incense burnt in a temple. The labdanum is simply marvellous : if you’re an addict just like I am, then do not hesitate. I haven’t found any other labdanum based scent that was half as whole and complex as this one. If you love balsams, be it Tolu or Peru, again : do not hesitate to fall for this one.
I am always so surprised by it whenever I wear it. It is pretty versatile : I wear it on night or day, for work or non-work meetings. It is both reassuring and impressive, lending you an other-worldly aura. It inspires the utmost respect.
A perfume fit for the calm, the wise, the almsgivers, the pious, the kind-hearted, the meek ; for the dreamers and idealists, the ones floating above a grim reality.
My favourite here.

I have a few bottles of your perfume and honestly, they are amazing. I’ve never smell anything like them before.
Definitely, Oak Moss is ranked the top position in my collection. It feels like I am vetyver in the furry and velvety forest floor. After trying many vetyver perfumes, I don’t think there is one vetyver that is not sharp and erect yet very soft and effortless like one in Oak Moss.
With the Arabian soul in their chests, Sharif and Tartar Leather always stand at my favorite list. All the notes are dancing together. I smell the wind inviting the spices to join the party. What stands out of your perfumes is that they are alive. The aroma doesn’t smell flat, instead it is 3-D, harmonized and have a beating heart.
Your knowledge and your perfumes are always my source of reference. Besides, authentic natural perfume brands like La Via Del Profumo, Aftelier, I feel like few people utilized the term “natural” for their own benefits. In my country, for example, some small business run many workshops to teach people to make perfume by mixing essential oils then diluting with alcohol in a couple of hours basis. It led me to a question that: Is it possible to make perfume by essential oils only ? I think that to make perfume needs absolutes in its heart and some animal tincture or resinoids as a fixative.
I’m wearing Mecca Balsam to seek a peaceful moment and I’d love to hearing and learning from you.
Warmest regards

Hello! I was lucky enough to try Mecca Balsam by chance – so beautiful.
Nothing like I have ever smelled before, but somehow just what I needed.
I have used it all up (it was a small sample) and I really miss it.
I’m so looking forward to experiencing some of your other creations.

I received my shipment of Tabac and Tawaf (plus a generous assortment of samples, thank you very much). I love them all. Actually, the oud caravan no.3 will take some getting used to for my novice nose. My journey into fragrance started with le Labo Rose 31 which was followed by quite a few other rose scents. I have 10 Lutens including the controversial Muscs Koublai Khan and Fumerie Turque. Mecca Balsam was for me a game changer. I thought I preferred feminine-leaning fragrances primarily but the depth and complexity of your creations have really turned me on.
Problem is I can’t decide which one I need next. I love the Chilum and Hindu Kush. I am anxious to try Don Corleone, African Night, and Frutti Paradisi. Well, it gives me much to look forward to in the new year.

Rich, smoky incense and resins, with notes of tobacco and dried fruits. High quality ingredients
Kevin Van de Velde –
Wonderful smokey incense with deep resin and spice. I’ve actually found that I love to use this as a base under other scents such as Amouage Epic Man. It has unbelievable strength for an all natural product and can compete and blend nicely with synthetics (should you care to). Completely useable as a stand alone fragrance.

Hello Fragrance Friends! I just received my full bottle of Mecca Balsam by La Via del Profumo and I’m going to attempt to pull myself together and share the experience.
First of all, what a gorgeous presentation! (I can’t stop staring at it lol) Ok, here’s the story: I ordered the mignon coffret from his website about 2 weeks ago (don’t judge me lol).. AbdesSalaam (Dominique) helped me put my order together. He humbly answered every question I had, helped me every way he could and shipped my order to me super-fast! I cannot emphasize enough how much his willingness to help and accommodate meant to me. He is without a doubt one of the most beautiful souls I’ve ever encountered. I try my best not to bombard him with praise (as I’m sure it could get annoying lol).. some days are better than others. I will say that he handles the attention with grace and humility.. always giving credit to the quality of the raw materials he uses over himself or his techniques. Albeit, there may be some truth to that.. the man is a GENIUS, end of story! Ok, ok back to Mecca Balsam.. typically, I don’t care for frags that boast floral accords (like AT ALL) but this is different. It’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. From the moment I got my first whiff, I haven’t stopped swooning over this masterpiece. I literally wore it every single day last week!! Do you know how crazy that is for me?! My collection is substantial and continuously growing.. there’s so much to experience.. who has time to be all caught up in one frag, right?! Apparently, I do. I just can’t get enough of it! A close friend said “I guess you do have a signature after all..” Damn it.. I was so anti-signature!
Friends, I stand before you a changed woman.. “My name is Darcy Rouh and my signature scent is Mecca Balsam by La Via del Profumo.”
Darcy –
Mecca Balsam is undoubtedly the most exquisite perfume I have ever come across.
Typically, I don’t care for floral accords but this concoction is a masterpiece.
I do believe I have found my signature scent and it feels as though a portion of my soul that I never knew existed has been awakened. I am conquered by this beautiful creation.. my spirit is alive and when I have it on,
I feel centered and completely balanced.
I do have one question.. I have read and reread the notes and reviews over and over the past few days and still find myself puzzled. The honey-like sweetness, where does it come from?? What is it?
It’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced before.
It’s truly divine.
