Why does AbdesSalaam Attar describe himself as a Perfumer-Composer rather than simply a perfumer?
The answer reveals something fundamental about the way he understands perfume itself. A perfume is not merely a successful combination of fragrant materials, nor the execution of a technical formula. It is a composition: an original work in which each material contributes its own voice while becoming part of a greater whole.
The comparison with music is intentional. A composer does not invent musical notes but discovers new relationships between them. The same written note may be performed by a violin, a flute, a clarinet, or an oboe. Although the note itself remains unchanged, each instrument gives it a different timbre, transforming the character of the entire musical phrase. Natural perfumery works in much the same way. A composition is shaped not only by its structure, but by the expressive qualities of the materials chosen to give that structure a voice. Two perfumes may be built around similar ideas, yet speak completely different languages because rose, jasmine, vetiver, sandalwood or oakmoss each contribute their own unmistakable character.
This understanding explains why AbdesSalaam Attar has long preferred the title Perfumer-Composer instead of Perfume Composer. The expression emphasizes that perfume is approached as an artistic composition rather than a manufactured product. The perfumer’s role is not simply to assemble ingredients, but to reveal meaningful relationships between natural fragrant materials until they become a coherent and expressive whole.
Such relationships cannot be discovered by theory alone. They emerge through years of direct experience with natural fragrant materials: learning their individual personalities, observing their affinities and understanding how they transform when brought together. Technique remains indispensable, but it serves perception rather than replacing it. In the end, every perfume composition reflects not only technical knowledge, but also the depth of the perfumer’s relationship with the materials themselves.
This approach differs from viewing perfume as the simple assembly of ingredients according to established rules or commercial objectives. Every composition begins with listening. The materials themselves suggest possibilities that cannot always be predicted by theory alone. Experience gradually teaches the perfumer to recognize these possibilities and to transform them into coherent artistic works.
Natural materials make this dialogue especially rich. Unlike standardized aroma chemicals, they are living aromatic expressions of nature, carrying subtle variations, complexity, and depth. The perfumer learns not only their individual qualities but also the countless conversations that arise when they meet one another. Each composition therefore becomes unique because every relationship between materials is unique.
Calling himself a Perfumer-Composer also shows his belief that perfumery is an art form. Like music, painting or poetry, a perfume may communicate atmosphere, emotion, memory and meaning without relying on words. Technical skill remains essential, but technique alone cannot produce artistic expression. It is only when knowledge, perception, imagination and experience work together that a true composition begins to emerge.
This understanding explains why the study of perfumery cannot be reduced to memorizing formulas. Learning composition means educating perception, developing familiarity with fragrant materials and gradually acquiring the ability to recognize relationships that remain invisible to the inexperienced nose. Every completed perfume is therefore the visible result of a much longer, largely invisible process of observation, listening and discovery.
