Who is AbdesSalaam Attar?
To describe AbdesSalaam Attar simply as a perfumer would be incomplete. For more than four decades, he has explored fragrance as an artistic language, a discipline of perception and a way of understanding the relationship between the material world and our inner experience. The perfumes are perhaps the most visible expression of this work, but they are only one part of a much broader journey.
The vision behind AbdesSalaam Attar’s work was not developed to define a brand or distinguish a perfume house. It grew out of decades of personal experience: living with fragrance every day, studying natural fragrant materials, observing their effects and allowing them to shape both his work and his way of life. What visitors encounter through the perfumes, the writings and the courses is therefore not a concept constructed afterward, but the natural expression of a path that has already been lived before it was explained.
For some, perfume making is merely a profession, and the stated “philosophy” can be seen as a marketing strategy. For AbdesSalaam Attar, however, it is a genuine reflection of a life dedicated to those principles. The perfumes, the writings and the teaching are not separate activities but different expressions of the same lived experience.
Working exclusively with natural fragrant materials, AbdesSalaam Attar has developed an independent approach to perfumery that brings together artistic composition, traditional knowledge, sensory education and philosophical reflection. His work draws inspiration from Sufi thought, Arabic traditions, the ancient Mediterranean, and, later, the discovery of the Japanese Way of Fragrance (Kōdō). Although these traditions developed independently, they share a common intuition: fragrance is capable not only of giving pleasure to the senses, but also of refining perception, nourishing memory and deepening our awareness of the world.
This understanding has shaped every aspect of his work. His perfumes are composed exclusively from natural fragrant materials. His writings explore perfume not simply as an object of beauty, but as a language through which nature, culture and human experience meet. His courses invite students to develop perception before technique, cultivating an intimate knowledge of fragrant materials through direct experience.
Together these different activities express what AbdesSalaam Attar has long called La Via del Profumo — The Way of Perfume. It is not simply the name of a perfume house, but a lifelong path where composing perfumes, living with fragrance and sharing its knowledge become different expressions of the same vision.
To understand AbdesSalaam Attar, therefore, is not simply to discover the person behind the perfumes. It is to discover a way of approaching fragrance that begins long before a perfume is composed and continues wherever scent becomes part of everyday life.
La Via del Profumo — The Way of Perfume
The name La Via del Profumo, literally The Way of Perfume, expresses the conviction that fragrance can become a path of knowledge and personal transformation. Just as other traditions have spoken of the Way of Tea (Chadō / Sadō), the Way of Flowers (Kadō), or the Way of Fragrance (Kōdō), perfume too can become a lifelong practice through which perception, attention, and appreciation of the world are gradually refined.
For AbdesSalaam Attar, learning perfumery has never meant simply acquiring technical skills. It begins with learning to smell, to observe patiently, and to develop a more intimate relationship with the fragrant world that surrounds us. The composition of perfumes is only one expression of this broader journey.
A Dialogue with Natural Fragrant Materials
Natural fragrant materials are never treated merely as ingredients. Each possesses its own character, rhythm and expressive qualities. The perfumer’s task is therefore not simply to control them, but first to understand them, allowing each composition to emerge from an attentive dialogue rather than from the application of predetermined formulas.
This material-centered approach explains why every perfume composed by AbdesSalaam Attar reflects careful observation and long familiarity with the raw materials themselves. Rather than imposing an idea over nature, the work seeks to reveal the expressive possibilities already present within the materials.
Living in a Fragrant World
For AbdesSalaam Attar, perfume does not end with the bottle. Fragrance belongs to everyday life. It accompanies food, the home, moments of reflection, personal well-being, changing seasons and our relationship with the natural world. Learning to recognize these countless expressions of fragrance is itself part of learning perfumery, because before composing perfumes one must first learn to inhabit a fragrant world. This is La Via del Profumo.
This is why his writings frequently move beyond perfumery itself. Why Teach?
Teaching naturally became another expression of this lifelong path. Sharing knowledge is not separate from composing perfumes; it is a way of preserving and transmitting an understanding of natural perfumery that can only remain alive through direct experience. Techniques may be explained in books, but perception must be cultivated through practice, attentive observation and repeated encounters with natural fragrant materials.
